DEVIL'S ISLAND PHOTOS
These are the "Salvation Islands" but better known as Devil's Island. Isle Royale where I toured today is on left and largest island. On right is Saint-Joseph Island and hidden behind the big islans is the smallest island, Devil's Island.
During prison times the French cut down all the trees so the prisoners could not make rafts to escape. The prison was closed in 1946 so trees have grown back now.
Saint-Joseph Island, second largest of the three.
French for "Salvation Islands"
Old wench used to unload boats
Trails were basic!
This used to be butcher building. Roofs have been put over most old building to help preserve them.
Smallest island is Devil's Island
Think I took the wrong path.
Another shot of Saint-Joseph Island
Not sure what this was.
Devil's Island in distance
Devil's Island is very small and only 30 of worse political prisoners at a time were put on the island.
Quarters for the 30 park rangers that live on the island.
Little museum inside these building
It was a HOT day. Could not imagine how hot it must have been when there were not trees. Just sun beating down on prisoners.
Spider monkey
Church used by guards and administrators during prison times.
This was the hospital
Lighthouse behind hospital
Part of old prison
These were the guards houses
Now covered with water plants, this was the cistern where rain water was caught for use. It was carved out of the rock by the prisoners with only spoons.
Sign warning of alligators in cistern
Building with solitary confinement cells
Solitary cell
Door to solitary confinement cell
Building mostly gone but you can see size of the cells
Another prison
The prisoners must have been chained to these.
There is a hotel on the island.
Peacocks
Ramp from water up to the prison to bring supplies up on carts.
