Interesting city? Weather here is perfect (sunny and mid 70's with nice breeze out on our balcony) at least. We managed to get tour tickets at last minute for the "Antofagusta City & Surroundings Tour". Rebecca decided she did not feel well (still coughing and felt a little feverish this morning) so she backed out right before leaving the ship. I should have stayed too. This tour was a disaster. No microphone on the bus and besides our tour guide was not from here so was asking locals where places were. First stop was a fish market which was interesting and good photo op. Big challenge was not getting crapped on my all the pigeons there. There were also some huge pelicans sitting on roof that looked interesting. Maybe our chef and Food & Beverage Manager did some fish buying here today. Talk about fresh!! From there went to the main square in town. Tour guide was so messed up that I finally left the tour as shuttle bus to the ship was operating from square also.
Town is mostly built on the side of a small mountain. Was out on balcony with my binoculars looking at the houses up there. A better term for them would be "shacks". The ones on the upper edge in one place had been almost totally covered by a dirt slide. Could not be a mud slide as they rarely get any rain here. Earthquakes are fairly common in Chile. So this port city has little of interest to see.
This is the second largest port in Chile. There are a couple HUGE copper mines a few hours drive from the port and brought by train here for export. Some of it, at least, is refined as I will include some photos of copper metal ready to be loaded on ships. Sorry, but today's posting is not too exciting.
We are sailing this evening at 6pm and will have another day at sea tomorrow on our way to Valparaiso, Chile. Valparaiso is the cruise port for the capital of Chile, Santiago, two hour drive away. Tonight we have dinner reservations at Prime 7, the steakhouse on board. We are also looking forward to the Los Gaucho's show this evening. We had a nice chat with Juan & Eileen yesterday. Love their show and they are great friends of Bobby & Judi Arvon who are also great friends of ours. Bobby is also a headliner entertainer on cruise ships.
Market
Lots of locals saying good bye
