Tuesday, Jan 31st--Laguna San Rafael, Chile

We only moved about 80 miles over night to Laguna San Rafael where we will be anchored until 8pm this evening.  At 1:50 a locally operated catamaran will pick us up and navigate the channels to a lagoon from where we will able to get up close to the San Rafael glacier.  It takes an hour to get to the glacier and an hour back so will have an hour at the glacier.  The glacier is one of 19 glaciers originating from the park's 13,314 feet high Monte San Valentin, the highest of the Andes mountains in southern Chile.  The Andes mountains get higher as you go north into Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador.  We also hope to see some dolphins, sea lions, elephant seals, Chilean sea otters and a host of abundant bird life on our 3 hour trip.  Laguna San Rafael is also a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and its nearly 4 million acres includes the entire Northern Ice Fields.
It is now 6:45pm and we are back from our catamaran trip to the glacier.  While Rebecca finishes up getting ready to go for cocktail and dinner, I will try to finish today's posting.  The catamaran was VERY nice and much nicer than I was expecting.  Of course Regent catered it with hot chocolate, coffee, sandwiches, and little desserts.  It was over an hour ride to the glacier and rained all afternoon so I got a little wet trying to take pictures.  Don't get me wrong because it was a nice trip but the glaciers we have seen on our Alaska cruises are much bigger and nicer.  I took a few photos for you.
Ok, dinner time!!  Tomorrow is day just cruising in the fjords and enjoying the sights.  Maybe we will have some sun for a change.
